DIY Insect Repellent

Effective DIY Insect Repellent: A Simple Kitchen Solution

Dealing with pesky insects like mosquitoes, flies, and other critters can be frustrating, especially during warmer months. Fortunately, you don’t need to rely on commercial insect repellents full of chemicals. You can create a highly effective repellent using common kitchen ingredients. This homemade solution is not only economical but also environmentally friendly. Here’s how you can use vinegar, olive oil, and shampoo to keep insects at bay.

The Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup olive oil (or other vegetable oil)
  • 1/2 cup shampoo

Instructions:

  1. Combine the Ingredients: In a bowl or container, mix 1/2 cup of vinegar, 1/2 cup of olive oil (or any other vegetable oil), and 1/2 cup of shampoo. Ensure you use a bowl or container that’s large enough to hold the mixture and facilitate easy stirring.
  2. Stir Thoroughly: Mix the ingredients well until you achieve a homogeneous solution. The vinegar and oil should be well-blended with the shampoo.
  3. Transfer to Application Method: Pour the mixture into a spray bottle for easy application or keep it in a bowl if you plan to use a sponge or cloth for application.
  4. Apply: Use the spray bottle to apply the solution to surfaces where insects are problematic, such as countertops, windowsills, door frames, and other entry points. If using a sponge or cloth, dip it into the mixture and wipe down the surfaces.
  5. Reapply as Necessary: Reapply the repellent as needed, particularly in high-traffic areas for insects or if you notice any resurgence of pests.
