Does the Delivery Fee Count as a Tip? Understanding Delivery Charges and Tipping Etiquette

Ordering food for delivery is supposed to be convenient. You choose your meal, place your order, pay the bill, and wait for your food to arrive. However, when the final amount includes a surprisingly high delivery fee, customers may wonder whether they should also tip the delivery driver.

This question often creates disagreement. Some people believe that paying a delivery fee should be enough, while others argue that delivery drivers deserve an additional tip for bringing food directly to the customer’s door.

So, does the delivery fee count as a tip? The short answer is usually no, but that does not automatically mean every customer must leave an additional tip. Understanding where delivery fees go, how drivers are compensated, and what tipping means in different countries can help customers make a fair decision.

What Is a Delivery Fee?

A delivery fee is a charge added to a food order when a restaurant or delivery service brings the food to the customer rather than requiring the customer to collect it.

The amount varies depending on the restaurant, delivery platform, distance, location, and other factors. Some restaurants offer free delivery, while others charge a fixed amount or calculate the fee based on distance.

Delivery fees may help cover expenses such as:

  • Transportation and delivery operations.
  • Fuel and vehicle-related expenses.
  • The costs of operating a delivery service.
  • Administrative expenses associated with processing and delivering orders.
  • Charges imposed by a third-party delivery platform.

However, the exact purpose of a delivery fee depends on the business. Some of the money may contribute to the driver’s compensation, but the entire fee does not necessarily go directly to the person delivering the food.

This is the most important distinction: a delivery fee is a charge for the delivery service, not automatically a personal tip for the driver.

What Is the Difference Between a Delivery Fee and a Tip?

Although both charges can appear on the same receipt, they serve different purposes.

A delivery fee is generally determined by the restaurant or delivery platform. Customers may have to pay it regardless of whether they decide to tip.

A tip, on the other hand, is an additional payment intended to recognize the service provided by the driver. Depending on the country and the business, tips may be voluntary, customary, or an important component of a worker’s earnings.

Consider a simple example.

Imagine that someone orders a pizza for 100 dirhams and pays an additional 20 dirhams for delivery. The total before any tip is 120 dirhams.

The customer might reasonably wonder why another payment should be necessary after already paying a substantial delivery charge.

However, unless the restaurant explicitly states that the delivery charge includes a gratuity paid to the driver, the customer should not assume that the driver receives those 20 dirhams.

The restaurant may retain the fee, use it to cover operating costs, or distribute some portion of it according to its own compensation arrangements.

Consequently, the delivery fee and the tip should be treated as separate charges unless the business clearly explains otherwise.

Does the Delivery Driver Receive the Delivery Fee?

This is where the situation becomes more complicated.

There is no universal rule governing how restaurants and delivery platforms distribute delivery fees. Different businesses use different payment arrangements.

In some cases, the delivery fee contributes to the driver’s compensation. In others, the restaurant or platform retains the fee to cover operational expenses. Some businesses pay drivers a fixed wage, while others use a combination of wages, per-delivery payments, incentives, and tips.

Customers generally cannot determine exactly how a delivery fee is distributed simply by looking at the amount on their receipt.

For example, a restaurant charging 25 dirhams for delivery does not necessarily mean the driver earns an additional 25 dirhams for that particular order. The driver might receive a separate payment, a fixed salary, or a portion of the charge.

This uncertainty explains why the delivery fee does not automatically replace a tip in places where tipping is customary.

However, it also highlights a legitimate concern: customers should not have to guess how workers are paid. Restaurants and delivery platforms can reduce confusion by clearly explaining their fees and compensation policies.

Is It Wrong Not to Tip a Delivery Driver?

Not necessarily. Whether it is appropriate to leave a tip depends on local customs, the circumstances of the delivery, and how drivers are compensated.

In countries where tipping delivery workers is customary, customers often leave an additional amount as a gesture of appreciation. In other places, tipping may be less common, and workers may rely more heavily on their regular wages.

It is therefore misleading to claim that every customer who does not tip is automatically disrespectful or selfish.

A customer may already be paying a high delivery fee, dealing with a tight budget, or living in a country where tipping is not an established expectation. These circumstances matter.

At the same time, the fact that a delivery fee is expensive does not necessarily mean the driver personally receives that money.

A fair assessment should distinguish between two separate questions:

  1. Is the customer justified in questioning a high delivery fee?
  2. Does the driver receive enough compensation for the work they perform?

The answer to the first question can be yes even if the answer to the second is no.

Customers can reasonably criticize a business’s pricing practices while still recognizing that the individual delivering their food may have little or no control over those prices.
