How to Whiten Clothes That Turn Yellow or Gray

Many people may relate to the struggle of maintaining pristine whiteness in their laundry. These things tend to get a dingy yellow or gray color as time goes on, mostly because perspiration and other bodily fluids stain them. There are a few all-natural solutions that may get rid of those pesky stains and bring back the color to your clothing.

Here are some effective methods to whiten clothes that have turned yellow or gray:

Natural Solutions (for lightly yellowed or grayed clothes):

  • Sunlight: The sun is a natural bleaching agent. Hang your clothes outside on a sunny day (ideally with good air circulation) for several hours. Bring them back in before dusk to prevent sun damage.

  • Lemon Juice: The citric acid in lemon juice can help whiten fabrics. Mix equal parts lemon juice and water in a spray bottle. Spritz the discolored areas of your clothes and let them sit in the sun for an hour. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and wash as usual.

  • Baking Soda: Baking soda is a mild bleaching agent that can also help remove odors. Create a paste of baking soda and water and apply it directly to the discolored areas. Let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour, then wash your clothes as usual.

  • Vinegar: White vinegar is a natural deodorizer and can also help brighten fabrics. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to your washing machine along with your detergent and wash on a warm or hot water cycle (depending on care instructions).
