Transforming a rusty tomato cage into a stunning outdoor lantern pillar is a creative way to upcycle materials and add a unique touch to your entryway. This easy-to-make DIY project is becoming increasingly popular online because it blends rustic charm with modern elegance. It’s perfect for anyone looking to enhance their outdoor decor with minimal effort and cost.

These DIY outdoor lantern pillars can be placed on either side of your front door or along a garden path to create a welcoming atmosphere. Pair them with other rustic elements like wooden signs or potted plants for a cohesive look. For a more modern touch, use vases of varying heights and shapes to add depth and interest.

DIY Outdoor Lantern Pillars

Materials

1 rusted tomato cage

3-5 dollar store glass vases (various sizes)

String lights or LED candles

Rust-resistant spray paint (optional, for cage)

Decorative stones or sand (optional, for weight and stability)

Directions

Clean the tomato cage to remove any loose rust or dirt. If desired, spray it with rust-resistant paint for a cleaner look. Let it dry completely.

Select glass vases of varying sizes. Arrange them from largest to smallest for stacking inside the tomato cage.

Place the largest vase at the bottom center of the tomato cage. Continue stacking the vases inside, ensuring they are stable and fit snugly.

Once the vases are stacked, add string lights or LED candles inside each vase for illumination.

If extra stability is needed, fill the bottom vase with decorative stones or sand.

Place the completed lantern pillar in your desired location and ensure it is stable and secure.

Variations & Tips

To add a personal touch, consider painting the glass vases in a frosted or metallic finish, or wrapping them with decorative wire or twine. For a seasonal twist, change the color of the lights or add holiday-themed decorations inside the vases. If you prefer a more colorful appearance, use vases in different hues to create a vibrant look. Remember to choose LED lights or candles if the lanterns will be left unattended to ensure safety.
