The first thing you notice about the contraption in mans hand is how unique and unusual it appears to be. It is quirky and has that old school charm. What your dad has in his hand is a Polaroid Swinger Model 20, an older model of instant camera from the 1960’s that became very common during this time.
Now days, we are able to take photographs with our phones and view them instantly. This type of technology felt “magical” back when it first came available. The Polaroid Swinger Model 20 allowed people to have the thrill of instant photography at a lower cost, which made it appealing to families and casual photographers.
This instant gratification was a big part of what made the camera so much fun. A birthday, holiday, or even just a simple moment in a persons home could quickly become a photograph. This instant gratification made the camera exciting, whereas many other film cameras were not as exciting due to the process of taking and developing film.
One of the reasons why this camera stands out, is because of its simplicity. The camera had few controls and was not created for experts, but for anyone who wanted to take a photograph. It was designed to be easy, fun, and approachable. In addition to being functional, the camera also had a fun and playful design to it.
The combination of being a simple camera, with a fun and playful design, is why the camera stands out in many of the older family photographs. It doesn’t just look like a camera, it looks like a small piece of history from a particular time period.
