What Really Happens During a Traffic Stop

Let’s shatter a few myths here, for so many people have things all wrong.

First, the idea you are being unfairly singled out, just because the officer is asking you a lot of questions, shining a lot of lights your way. More than likely this is routine procedure. It does not mean they have determined something bad about you. It means they are doing their job by the numbers.

Second, the idea that if they put their hands on your car, they are “framing” you or trying to intimidate you. It is a method tried and true that still works.

Third, the idea that being asked to leave your vehicle means something bad is about to happen. Sometimes this is for clarification, sometimes for safety. The point is: do not panic.

So that flashing red and blue light you see when you are looking in your mirror? It is not just a “gotcha” moment. It is the beginning of a carefully orchestrated procedure about traffic stops, designed to keep all subjects concerned, you, your passengers, and the officer, in safety.

From the instant they notice a possible problem to the final “drive safe” wave, there is a pattern. Once you know this, it becomes a little less alarming. A little more human.

So the next time you are pulled over, take a deep breath. Pull over satisfactorily. Show your hands. Let the officer do his job. And remember, most of the time, it is but a conversation with papers at the end.

Trust me, it is knowing what is actually going on in the traffic stop that can turn fear into understanding. And this is good for everybody.
