I love a porch project that looks festive without asking me to sacrifice an entire weekend, and these giant patriotic firecrackers are exactly that. Using six empty cardboard potato chip cans, a few cans of spray paint, and one thick rustic rope, you can make a bold red, white, and blue decoration that looks oversized and charming from the street.
This is the kind of craft I reach for when I want something high-impact but still realistic for a busy week. If you save recyclables like I do “just in case,” this project is especially satisfying. It’s great for front porches, entryways, summer parties, or anywhere you want a fun Americana touch without building anything complicated.
Materials
6 empty cardboard potato chip cans, standard 5.5 to 6 ounce size, cleaned and dry
2 cans red spray paint, 12 ounces each
1 can white spray paint, 12 ounces
1 can blue spray paint, 12 ounces
1 roll painter’s tape, 1 inch wide
12 to 18 black zip ties, 8 inches long
1 piece thick brown rustic rope, 8 to 10 feet long and about 3/4 inch thick
1 drop cloth or large piece of cardboard, at least 3 feet by 4 feet
1 pair scissors
1 paper towel or soft cloth for dusting cans
Instructions
1. Wipe all six chip cans clean and make sure they are completely dry. Remove any loose crumbs, plastic lids, or sealing paper so the paint will stick better.
2. Set out a drop cloth in a well-ventilated outdoor area and place the cans on their sides with space between them. If needed, lightly dust the outside again right before painting.
3. Decide on your color layout before you paint; I like using two red, two white, and two blue cans for a balanced look. This makes the finished bundle feel intentional once it’s hanging on the porch.
4. Spray paint the cans in light, even coats, rotating each one as you go. Let the first coat dry, then add a second coat anywhere the cardboard still shows through.
5. Let the cans dry fully according to the spray paint directions before handling them. If you want cleaner stripes or color blocking, apply painter’s tape after the base coat dries, then spray the second color and remove the tape carefully.
6. Lay the thick brown rope straight on your work surface and arrange the six painted cans alongside it. Stagger the can heights slightly so the group looks more like a cluster of giant firecrackers instead of one flat row.
7. Starting with the bottom can, wrap a zip tie around the can and rope together near the lower third of the can. Add a second zip tie near the upper third so each can is secured in two places.
8. Repeat the zip-tying process for all six cans, keeping them snug against the rope. Alternate the positions a little as you work so the bundle feels full and dimensional.
9. Tighten each zip tie firmly, then trim the excess ends with scissors. Check that none of the cans slide easily, and add an extra zip tie anywhere the arrangement feels loose.
10. Coil or knot the top of the rope into a loop for hanging, or leave extra rope length if you want to drape it from a porch hook or nail. Fluff and angle the cans one last time so the display reads clearly as oversized decorative firecrackers.
11. Hang the finished piece on your porch, near a front door, or beside a planter where the colors can really pop. If your porch is exposed to heavy rain, place it in a more sheltered spot to help the cardboard last longer.
