Add stripes: Use painter’s tape to create simple stripes on the red or blue cans for a more classic firecracker look. I think this gives the project a more polished feel without adding much extra work.
Use a matte finish: If you prefer a slightly rustic style, choose matte spray paint instead of glossy. It pairs really nicely with the thick brown rope and gives the whole piece a less plastic-looking finish.
Make it sturdier: For a longer-lasting version, spray with a clear outdoor sealer once the paint is fully dry. Since the cans are cardboard, this extra step is worth it if your porch gets humidity or occasional splashes.
Change the layout: Instead of one vertical cluster, try making two smaller bundles of three cans each. This works well if you’re decorating both sides of a front door.
Hide the zip ties: Turn the zip tie locks toward the back or inside of the arrangement as you tighten them. It’s a tiny detail, but it makes the finished project look much cleaner.
Save time on prep: I like to collect and clean the cans a few days ahead, then do all the painting at once on a free evening. Breaking it up that way makes this project feel very manageable, especially during a packed summer week.
